Despite vast improvements in diagnosis and treatment over the last half-century, mental illness is underdiagnosed and undertreated. The reasons are many and varied. Among them: a lack of access for individuals amid a shortage of care providers, the interference of social determinants of health such as transportation problems, and social stigma. All play a role.
