Childhood exposure to a parental figure’s incarceration is associated with increased psychiatric diagnoses, increased legal issues, decreased financial stability, and negative social outcomes as young adults. Parental figures included biological, adopted, or stepparents or any adult responsible for a child’s care and discipline.
