Webinar: The Prison System and Mental Health: A Discussion on the Stigma and Challenges Faced Upon Re-Entry Into Society
Location: Online Via PsychU.org
Description: Serious mental illness (SMI) has become prevalent in the jail/prison system, with the 2005 Bureau of Justice reporting that 14% of inmates in state and federal facilities met criteria for SMI vs. 5% of the general population. In today’s webinar, Catherine Judd, MS, PA-C, CAQ-Psy, Assistant Clinical Professor at University of Texas Southwestern School of Health Professions, and Darell A. Smith, President of the Greater Dallas Coalition, will define the elements of the criminal justice system, discuss the challenges of treating patients with mental illness within the criminal justice system, and recognize the risk of incarceration for patients with mental illness and the stigmatization associated with criminal offenders, SMI, and SMI offenders populations.
