Description: Current technological advances allow people to be increasingly and constantly engaged in a variety of social media platforms.  This engagement has been studied to assess if and how interactions on these social media platforms may affect mental health, particularly depression and anxiety. In this webinar, Dr. Brian Primack, MD, PhD and Dr. Jeff Cain, EdD, will discuss the nuances of emerging data on social media and mental health as well as discuss the future.

Event Speakers

Brian A. Primack MD, PhD
Dean of the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas

Brian A. Primack MD, PhD, is Dean of the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas, and also serves as the Henry G. Hotz Endowed Chair in Educational Innovations and Professor of Public Health and Medicine.  Dr. Primack combines his expertise in education, technology, human development, and medicine by researching both positive and negative effects of media messages on health, in which he is recognized with national and international awards. He is a pioneer on the use of media literacy education in preventing adolescent smoking, underage drinking, and other harmful adolescent health behaviors. Dr. Primack graduated from Yale University magna cum laude in 1991 with degrees in English and Mathematics, studied human development for his master’s degree from Harvard University, then subsequently graduated first in his class and summa cum laude from Emory Medical School.

Jeff Cain, EdD, MS
Director of the Office of Teaching Innovation & Scholarship at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy

Jeff Cain, EdD, MS, is an associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice & Science and Director of the Office of Teaching Innovation & Scholarship at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. He directs the University of Kentucky Teaching Certificate Program for Residents and mentors pharmacy residents through an academia rotation. He is actively involved in social and behavioral sciences research with numerous research publications and presentations pertaining to digital media, well-being, innovative teaching, and contemporary higher education issues.  He was a 2013 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Academic Leadership Fellow and in 2017 was named an AACP Distinguished Teaching Scholar. Dr. Cain currently serves as associate editor of Currents in Pharmacy Teaching and Learning and is the editor for Pulses scholarly blog.
