Virtual Forum: Mental Health Considerations After Natural Disasters:  Helping Those In Nature’s Path (Emergency Relief Series Part 1)

Description: 
Health care professionals play an important role in assessing patients and providing services and support after the occurrence of a natural disaster. In this Virtual Forum, Allan Chrisman, MD, and Richard Weisler, MD, will discuss clinical pearls from their professional experiences assisting patients coping with the aftermath of such an event. In Part 1 of this series, speakers will cover types, psychological responses for both survivors and responders, and post-disaster treatment considerations.

Allan Chrisman, MD
Featured Speaker

Allan Chrisman, MD, is an Associate Professor Emeritus at Duke University School of Medicine. During his 40 years of practice in general adult and child psychiatry, he worked on inpatient, residential and outpatient settings. He practiced for 13 ½ years of practice at an HMO, the Harvard Community Health Plan where he was a consultant to pediatric and internal medicine practices. He also was chief of two mental health departments at the Harvard Community Health Plan- Cambridge and Watertown, MA. Since retiring, he has pursued his interest in disaster mental health as an American Red Cross Disaster Health Services and Disaster Mental Health volunteer during disasters.

Dr. Chrisman received his MD from the George Washington University School of Medicine.

Richard Weisler, MD
Featured Speaker

Richard Weisler, MD, has had a psychiatric practice since 1980, where he and his team follow more than 2,000 patients with a mixture of psychiatric disorders. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Chapel Hill School of Medicine, where he has also served for many years as chairman of the Board of Visitors for the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Weisler is also Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Weisler received his MD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
