Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in United States with an approximate 270,000 people committing suicide between 2001 and 2009. Those with a mental illness, substance abuse disorder or people who have experienced traumatic or violent events are at greater risk of attempting suicide. In 2012, the US Surgeon General called for a national strategy to prevent suicides in the US. The report details action items to help reduce suicides in the US over the next decade.[i]
