Rural hospital closures more than doubled between 2013 through 2017 with 64 closures. During the previous five-year span, 31 rural hospitals closed. Rural hospital closures disproportionately occurred among hospitals with one of three characteristics: located in the southern region (Texas to Delaware); structured as a for-profit entity; or received the Medicare Dependent Hospital payment designation….
